Listening to: Dashboard Confessional - Slow Decay
In 2000, just 8 years ago, the Knight Initiative won 61%-39% defining Marriage as between a Man and a Woman. In 2008, just 4 of 7 Justices on the CA Supreme Court ruled this violated California's Constitution and they were decried as Activists judges.
As someone else in Sacramento has already posted, they weren't activists, they were judges doing their job. Last night, California proved they aren't even much in front of the general population. In an election that saw the opposition spend $36 million to pass Prop 8. Having achieved that victory by 52%-48.7%.
Well I see this as a victory for us, California came extremely close to proving that the voting public can and in the end will have to legalize gender neutral marriage.
With Barrack in the White House, if we can overturn Gays in the Military, then we will reach a large body of under-educated potential voters that will increasingly be our friends and our allies.
Last night was a HUGE win for GLBT community, even if it wasn't the Hail Mary touchdown we hoped to achieve.

Weight Watchers
Tuesday -
iTunes Now Playing: Nightwish - Romanticide
So yesterday or more accurately on Sunday I was looking at myself in the mirror (actually my shirtless friends dancing with me) and decided I really really had to do something about my expanding gut.
So armed with the following piece of data:
Q. How many calories make 1 pound of weight?
About 3,500 calories adds up to about 1 pound. This applies whether they are food calories coming in, or calories (burned by exercise) going out.
If you eat 3,500 calories more than your body needs, you will put on about 1 pound. If you use up 3,500 calories more than you eat, you will lose about 1 pound in weight.
... I decided to start a fairly (no pun intended) aggressive weight loss routine. I have not been exercising consistently since I returned to school for my MBA five years ago and I continue to injure myself when I return too aggressively (damn addiction to exercise). So I decided Sunday night that I would try to burn 2000 calories per day in exercise. Without regard to calorie intake my first goal was to simply increase the amount of daily calories burned in exercise. Later will come resistance training to build muscle mass which in turn will increase the basal metabolic rate as well as better food and drink in-take controls (currently I am trying to cut large meals in half - stupid restaurant proportions, and snack intelligently).
No program success is really possible without taking some base measurements to track progress. So I depressed myself today and got on my scale 163.4#/74.1kg and 15.8% body fat via bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA). I use the Tanita BF682W set to athlete mode to more accurately meet the special monitoring needs of physically fit users. I’m 45 years old so at 15.8% I’m in the healthy category.
Finally, the real tell tale, for aesthetic reasons is the tape measure. I use a tailor’s tape so I avoid Internet inches. Today I was a whopping 35”/88.9cm. OUCH!! Not aesthetically pleasing at all! I have an image of the disgrace, but I think I need to update MacJournal in order to post it. (Note: Updated to MacJournal 5.1 and violĂ [look there-French] images).
So, on Monday I got on my road bike and road the American River Parkway from my home to Sunrise Access and back, 31-miles and 1447 calories (according to my Polar F11 Heart Rate Monitor (HRM). Then last night I joined FrontRunners/FrontWalkers Sacramento for a 10K run that according to my Nike+ iPod burned an additional 749 calories. A pretty effective first day since I also managed to control my eating. Now to keep this up for two weeks and see how big a difference in my waistline/waste line this makes. :-)
The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a statistical measurement which compares a person's weight and height. Though it does not actually measure the percentage of body fat, it is a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight based on how tall a person is (Wikipedia-BMI). There is a Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) and a cool picture version at National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) site.

Grand Old Party (GOP) Platform
Thursday, August 21, 2008 3:12 PM
I have always advocated that you must change from within as well as from without so I admit that I am a registered Republican. No I don’t vote any race based on a Republican or Democratic or HRC endorsement. I strongly believe that endorsements should be illegal and that organizations should be limited to discussing strengths and weaknesses of individuals and issues.
So... the following widget shows what is being discussed by the GOP platform committee which is taking web feedback.

Juice Fast - Day 1
Day 1
Today I am starting a Juice Fast. The reasons why are three fold: 1) a couple of months ago after a Saturday run I was sitting at my computer and turned my neck to massage it and found a lump, since I don’t have any insurance I haven’t had it checked. I did up my Iodized Salt intake marginally in case it was a goiter, but that seems very unlikely. 2) On Friday, 25th of April, I got out of the shower after a run and noticed purple spots all over my trunk but according to the skin rash worksheet on http://www.familydoctor.org/ my condition is like any of the rashes. It seems mostly likely to be irritant contact dermatitis but I haven’t changed products really -- I did stop using my body scrub and changed the sheets on my bed but to no effect. 3) Weight, my health is suffering, my endurance is but a fraction of what it was when I went to school 4 1/2 years ago and I can’t seem to get it back. My weight has pushed around 165# - 168#, it looks unattractive, it makes me sluggish and less active.
So, today I start a detoxification/spring cleansing per Elson M. Haas, M.D. on the Nutritional Program For Fasting excerpt website. Since I am heavy and I have a social obligation today and a UC Berkeley graduation tomorrow I am going to start with meal reduction and meat and diary cut back and do the cleansing on Thursday starting the full juice fast on Friday.
After researching juicers online I decided to purchase the Breville Juice Fountain Compact BJE200XL, however, all five of the online sites were sold out and aren’t expecting stock until July, not very useful for me. So I am off to Fry’s Electronics, Circuit City, Best Buy, Linen ‘N Things all of which normally carry the product. I may have to settle for something else although as a very last resort I could stick with Naked® or Odwalla® juices which are the closest to pure juice I know.
So, yesterday I managed to get to the guy and do an hour of weights and last night I ran with the FrontRunners/FrontWalkers Sacramento and put in 8 miles at an 8 minute pace. It is said you will drop a minute/mile for every 10# your drop, so I want to see a 15# decrease (no loss, I am not intending on finding it again :-p ) and really want a #20 drop. Weigh-in today: 165.2# and 34 3/4” across the navel (30” or even 29” is my goal).
